Data covers the 2025 NFL season.
Core Metrics
- EPA
- Expected Points Added. Measures how much a play increased or decreased the offense's expected points. Positive = good, negative = bad. League average per play is near 0.
- Avg EPA
- A player's average EPA across all their plays. The best QBs average +0.15 to +0.25. Negative means below-average efficiency.
- Comp Prob (CP)
- The model's estimated probability that a pass would be completed, based on distance, coverage, and situation. Higher = easier throw.
- CPOE
- Completion % Over Expected. How much better or worse the QB completed passes vs. what the model predicted. +10% means significantly above expectation.
- Success
- A play is successful if it gains β₯40% of yards needed on 1st down, β₯60% on 2nd, or 100% on 3rd/4th.
Passing & Receiving
- Air Yards
- How far the ball traveled through the air past the line of scrimmage. Negative = behind LOS (screen pass).
- YAC
- Yards After Catch. Yards gained by the receiver after securing the ball.
- Exp. YAC
- Expected yards after catch based on the catch location, coverage, and angle. Compares actual YAC vs. expectation.
- 1st Down Prob
- Probability the receiver converts a first down based on catch location and YAC model.
- QB EPA / QB Hit
- EPA credited directly to the QB regardless of receiver. QB Hit = QB was contacted by a defender on the play.
- Expected Pass
- The probability the offense would pass given the down, distance, score, and time. High = predictable passing situation.
Situational & Personnel
- D & D
- Down and Distance. E.g. "2 & 7" = 2nd down, 7 yards to go for a first down.
- Offense Personnel
- The grouping of skill players on the field. "11" = 1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR. "12" = 1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR.
- Defense Personnel
- The defensive package. "Nickel" = 5 DBs. "Dime" = 6 DBs. "Base 4-3" = standard 4 down linemen.
- Defenders in Box
- Number of defenders lined up near the line of scrimmage before the snap. More = stacked run defense.
- Coverage
- The defensive coverage scheme. Cover 1 = man with single high safety. Cover 2 = two deep safeties. Cover 3 = three deep zones. Cover 6 = split field coverage.
- Route
- The pass route run by the receiver on the play (e.g. Slant, Corner, Post, Go, Curl).
